Dr. Tim's Classic Chair Massage

Dr. Tim working at Monroe Aquatics & Fitness Center

Hi Everyone, Dr. Tim here and WELCOME to my Instructional Video explanation of Classic Chair Massage. Over the past 15 years, I've developed a SAFE and EFFECTIVE method to massage clients using the Massage Chair. I call this seated chair routine CLASSIC because each stroke or maneuver was designed and tested over many years to be THERAPEUTIC as well as very SPECIFIC.

I will DEMONSTRATE on Video how and when to use your palmar or anterior surface of your hand, the pads of your thumbs, the dorsum or posterior hand, the proximal row of phalanges or digits, your olecranon process of the elbow and, of course, your fingers.

This is a TERRIFIC Massage routine to LEARN because there's so much room to "spin off" from my original sequence.

Remember, this is a TEMPLATE or OUTLINE with PLENTY of ROOM for additions and variations!

The making of every EXCELLENT massage starts with a PLAN. This is YOUR plan for giving an EXCELLENT Chair Massage.

"But, first things first!"

Your Massage Chair was built to be sturdy, adaptable to many body SHAPES and SIZES and quite comfortable as long as you make sure your chair's CHEST PIECE is flat against your client's sternum, at whatever angle fits THEIR sternal angle.

The chair's FACE PIECE must be ADJUSTED to the length of your client's neck. The proper angle of the face piece can be visually calculated so your EFFLEURAGE and PETRISSAGE strokes can be performed effectively and therapeutically. If your client's neck doesn't have too many horizontal wrinkles, the face piece is probably at a good angle. Your client's CHIN should never touch the black bar at the BOTTOM of the face piece. If their chin is touching the bar, either adjust the face piece angle (Up or Down), lift the face piece UP off the BASE and/or LIFT the face piece higher all together.

"Take TIME to do this. It's IMPORTANT!"

The LEG RESTS on your chair are perfect accessories to keep your client's low back and spine in proper alignment and ERGONOMICALLY SAFE, too! If your client has PHYSICAL CONDITIONS, such as knee, hip, ankle or foot problems, remove both leg rests and make sure to help them get ON and OFF your massage chair SAFELY.

The MOST IMPORTANT and MOST OVERLOOKED positioning challenge for the chair is where your client's hands are to be placed on the arm rest. Hands MUST be close enough to your client's body so the MUSCLES of the upper back and shoulders are RELAXED, especially the ridge of the Upper Trapezius, the Supraspinatus, the Levator Scapulae and the Rhomboid muscles.

The MOST EFFECTIVE treatment for the RELEASE of these muscles can be achieved by using your ELBOW in a carefully controlled manner, as long as your client's SHOULDERS are RELAXED. This Elbow Maneuver is the KEY to every SUCCESSFUL chair massage, as far as I'm concerned.

"Learn it well!"

I will discuss how many of the same massage table strokes, such as Effleurage, Petrissage, Tapotment AKA (also known as) Percussion and Compression can be successfully performed with minor variations on the Massage Chair.

The same Contraindications and Endangerment Sites apply to chair massage as they apply to table massage. My personal favorite massage chair is made by Stronglite. Stronglite's Massage Chair is safe, fully adjustable, affordable and SUPER STRONG!

The chair sequence you'll LEARN in my "Classic Chair Massage" Video was designed for beginning Massage Therapists who need to "tweak" their chair routine, for advanced Massage Therapists who need more effective ways to treat their massage clients, and for the Massage Therapy student who desires to LEARN a proven chair massage routine.

Use my Chair routine to BUILD or ENHANCE your massage practice.

"Remember, other than your "Word of Mouth" referrals, chair massage may be the BEST way for you to market your HANDS!
